Chessage (RC2)
« on: November 20, 2005, 08:41:02 AM »
Finally, after more than a year's work, I have got my game ready! It's a freeware, multiplayer only (can be tested without other player) chess game called Chessage.

The game started as a simple network test, intended to be finished in two weeks. No graphics (save for the board and the pieces) or menus or anything.

Well, the plans got out of hand, and here we are. Complete multiplayer chess game, with 4 graphical themes. (Good graphics = something that every chess game should have... :P  ::) )

Actually this is still Release Candidate 2, as some bugs (that matter anyway) may still exist in the game...

Some screenshots:

You can download the game here (16.7 mb's, sorry about that :P).

EDIT:
I've updated the game to RC2. Here's the list of most significant changes:
- Basic moves can be shown
- Saving systems works (again)
- "Safety mode" to create logs if the game crashes
- Eaten pieces no longer float in the air (unintentionaly)
- Sounds can be turned on/off
- Windows' mouse cursor can be hid when useing the running in window mode
- Reduced the size of the installation file

Known bugs:
- The game may crash on some computers. Please run the game in "safety mode" and send me the log gile if this happens on your computer.
- Fire ratling can be heard in the medieval theme even if graphics are set low and there is no fire in the fireplace.

All comments and bug reports are most welcome!  :)

Downloading now Timo :)

... but I gotta ask... are the chess pieces weighless in space?... cos they look so awesomely substantial & heavy  :P lol (jk)... seriously though, it looks incredible!

**edit**... I've just played it Timo!... and the graphical presentation is as good, if not better than ANY other chess program I've ever seen!... well done!

However, it did allow me to make lot's of 'illegal' moves?... is that because I wasn't actually playing an opponent?... or is that one of the 'bugs' you mentioned?... either way, I was VERY impressed! :)

Very nice Timo!
My son & I are playing on our LAN.
Quantam, Every chess set made before computers has allowed illegal moves. This one even allows you to put multiple pieces in the same square!
I like it a lot!

Thanks quys! :)

CaptainJ, nice to hear someone is actually playing this game. :D

Yep, it's totally intentional that you can move the pieces where you like. This way it feels more as if you were playing with real pieces (well, at least that's why I did that way :P).

Though what is a bug, is that you can place many pieces to the same square. :P After you've done so, you can't move the original piece. Thanks for that CaptainJ, it will get fixed!  :)

LOL... yep!... but it usually resulted in violence of some kind  ;)

My kids have been learning to play chess... I'll try it over our LAN... and if one of em cheats... it WILL result in violence! (unless it's me of cause  :P lol).

I hadn't noticed the fact that if multiple pieces are placed on one square the first couldn't be moved?... I hope you get the problem sorted okay Timo :)

But as I said before... it looks & feels really nice so far :):)

I got that bug fixed already, as well as some others too. :D

One friend of mine told me that the game sometimes stops loading. Has anyone else experienced anything like this? I've tried this game myself now on 3 computers without any problems.

Too true! We were taunting each other with the chat feature last night even though we were sitting two feet apart!

Another nice thing about Chessage not telling you what you can and can't do is that special moves like en passant and castling are easy.

Near the end of the game last night when my son wouldn't concede an obvious loss, I moved my pawns all the way across the board (illegally) and finished with 7 queens. ;)

We'll check the update when T-man gets home from school today.

Thanks Timo. Lots of fun!
Where can I send payment for the game?
